of their homes. it happened last night in manassas, virginia. this fire spread quickly between close-together homes in the 8300 block of tillotts loop. kristin fisher is joining us with more. >> the fire is out but the families are feeling the affects of this massive fire. three homes were destroyed t. eight more damaged. and the families that were living inside are being housed by the red cross. started around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. that's this when the fire broke out. neighbors heard a loud bang and saw two houses engulfed in flames an then the flames spread to eight houses total. neighbors said it looked like dominoes falling. the flames were so powerful it carried embers 350-yards away. the plumes of smoke so thick and heavy that many driving to manassas after work thought that a plane had crashed nearby. >> i saw five plumes separate. and i thought, man i hope -- i know the airport is there and everything. we have great security here. >> reporter: incredibly no one was inside the homes when the fire broke out. a few people did go to the hospital for smoke inhalation. but for

in virginia, a driver tried to make it through high water ended up in need of a big rescue, that despite of a big sign. rescuers rescued two people. police believe the driver simply disregarded the warning. >>> and here's another reason not to do that. this car got stuck in some high water this morning in vienna. the water came up 2 feet near the intersection of old courthouse road. the water receded after workers cleared out the storm drain. top. >> you know, southern maryland was a bulls eye for this morning's heavy rain and could be the bulls eye again tonight. many people who live along the chesapeake bay had to pile sandbags along their front doors. and in lusbee, the weather cracked one home's foundation. scott. >> topper, chesapeake ranch estates is where i am. officially down in solomon's, 7.3 inches of rain. a phenomenal amount of rain. it created mud slide conditions in front of this house. pushing water and mud completely through the foundation. >> a house completely undermined by water and mud. a disaster that collapsed the concrete block wall that used to be the foundatio

in northern virginia where a few vehies got stuck in high water. our team coverage of this wet day continues now with news 4's tracee wilkins in annandale, virginia. >> reporter: here in northern virginia, a big mess with plenty of roads closed throughout the area. here on this road, another example of why you should not try your hand at high water. it was a wet, long, miserable morning commute that started for a lot of drivers on the inner loop of the beltway, after a tractor trailer jackknifed at the 270 split. fuel poured from the truck causing major backups throughout the morning commute. anwhile, in annandale on woodburn road, a v-dot worker says a husband and wife drove through the roadblock and tried to g through this standing water but didn't make it. they both had to be rescued. the water stood about two feet on thear side and a foot and a half on the side the driver tried to go through. >> i work right on woodburn road. i haven't been down there, but i'm wondering what it's like. >> reporter: v-dot crews surveyed flood-prone areas for the possibility of road closures, water ran thr

. >> reporter: the fire marshal is the president of the virginia fire prevention association, which is pushing to require builders to install sprinklers in homes. he says the industry has to weigh the possible losses against added costs and what people can afford. >> yesterday one of the firefighters was talking about vinyl siding and what that may have -- how that may have contributed in the fire. what does the fire marshal say about that? >> any firefighter they talk to they to be like vinyl siding in general but they say it is the case everywhere. it is cheap and easy to maintain so you can't stop vinyl siding. you can't require brick. it is too costly, but he says what people need to do is practice better fire safety. he said just in manassas alone, in the last year, they had $100,000 worth of kitchen fires. he said people need to pay attention. they cannot leave grills burn thong porch and walk away. be cognizant of fire safety. and it would do a lot of good, he says. >> thank you for that report. >>> 0 record record-breaking heat across the area tonight. topper is on the terrace on this

that won't last much longer. look at when's coming across virginia and the carolinas. extreme tropical moisture is moving directly toward our region. i well take a closer view and look at the rainfall numbers. just take a look at when's happening. a batch of heavy rain and thunderstorms across portions of frederick county headed to our west. another batch coming from the south. heavy rain to the south of our region right now. that will look at the rainfall totals. some are extremely impressive particularly along the bay. all along the bay corridor, 5, 6, 7, 8 inches in some spots. we've had reports of 10 inches. eastern shore a lot less. it is a quick cutoff. 3 inches or so, 2 1/2 out to the west. right along the bay, just east of the city, harford county right through eastern baltimore county is where we've seen the high, high rainfall totals. these are just estimates. some areas have had even more. joining me now bernadette woods has had a look at the numbers. some are really incredible. >> even where it falls off, we're talking a few inches of rain. the highest amounts we've seen wi

at stories making headlines this morning. a lorton, virginia, community mourning the loss of a young mother and two of her children. they were killed in a house fire yesterday. 24-year-old ally anderson was able to save three of her five kids by lowering them down to her uncle on the ground. >>> theresa lewis will be executed in virginia tonight. the first punishment of this type for a woman in the commonwealth in a century. she was sentenced to death for providing sex and money to two men who killed her husband and her stepson back in october of 2002. so far the governor has decided not to grant clemency. lewis is scheduled to be put to death by ion at 9:00 p.m. at a correctional facility in jarrett. >>> gray and michelle rhee scheduled to meet. it will be a closed discussion at city hall at noon today. gray has said that her future in the position would lie heavily based on this conversation today. >>> 7:16 right now. got some city business. now some business that all of us are going to want to listen to. >> hot and humid. we're going to have to open up the pools again. >> why do they shu

credibility to decisions being made. >> there is a change in traffic patterns for drivers in northern virginia. two new exit ramps are open as part of the wilson bridge product. officials tell us eventually they should make the commute a lot easier. news 4's megan mcgrath reports on how the change went over this morning. >> reporter: some changes for folks who drive to alexandra. two no raew ramps are open. there are growing pains as a result of th new traffic configuration. we saw congestion this morning as people get used to the new traffic pattern. the first ramp will connect motorists on e interloop with telegraph road in the northbound direction. the second ramp provides direct access from the outer loop of the beltway to eisenhower avenue and will allow driverso go northbound on telegraph road. this is going to cut down on weaving and the merging that's been part of the old trafc configuration. traportation officials say it's going to be safer as a result and, of course, the hope is that it will eventually reduce congestion en everybody gets used to the new pattern. also, the temporary d

drivers coming out of virginia to commit to 270 and then those drivers who are merely take 2g 70 to continue their trip out of virginia. let me show you. this is the pa poen. i promise you the delays are pretty substantial. look at that. nothing is moving on 270 north. obviously so witho lanes open and these lanes do kick back as you might imagine to the capital beltway. it was a very nasty commute a you made your approach. as y can see, inching along painfully slow and the inner loop, by the way, is headed away from the camera here up toward e top of your screens, continue onto 270. and then again as we make the pass, democracy boulevard, it is just"i inching along. unfortunately they're moving the cameras around because it is a live accident. the ramp that comes around is a flyover ramp to continue on the hov lanes to continue northbound ong 270. the best workaround, there's not really a direct one, but 29 working its way through bethesda. but those lays -- excuse me -- those workarounds are not going to last for a very long time because a lot of the driversre going to have the
